My Child Wants To Join Scouts. Now What?

Your scout recently came home with a flier for cub scouts and says that they want to join, but you have no idea what comes next. This post is for you!

The first thing you should know, is that there are people here to assist you in getting started in scouting and that you don’t need to come in with any knowledge or skills to get started.

Get Ready for Fun!

Your kids are about to join an organization that will teach them life lessons, outdoor and survival skills as well as citizenship and so much more. If you were in Scouts, you know what to expect. If you weren’t, we look forward to showing you and your scouts, a great time!

Our unit knows that people have busy schedules and limited availability. We have two meetings, per month. Pack Meetings, the entire pack of Kinder through 5th graders are typically on the second Monday each month. Den meetings, your grade level specific den, will happen on a Monday following the pack meeting each month. There is typically a week in between, but sometimes this isn’t possible.

Submit Interest to Join a Unit

The immediate next step is to find your local cub scout pack and fill out the invitation so that the unit leaders can reach out and talk to you. This can typically be done through a QR Code on the flier or by visiting beascout.org.

If you are on our page because the flier was for Pack 1110 and you want to know more about us, below are some details on our pack for you to review and decide if it is a good fit.

Register with Scouting America – $91

Once you decide to register, you will complete the full application for the scout, if you plan on volunteering, the adult application can be found on the same page. The application will ask for some details on your scout and yourself so that we can place them in the appropriate den as well as have the necessary contact information to reach you.

At the end of the application there is a registration fee of $91 and an optional fee of $15 for the scout life magazine (while not required, it can be fun if your scout likes it). This brings the total for national registration to somewhere between $91 and $106.

There is some financial assistance available for this fee if you are not in a position to pay it (reach out to your local scouting office for details). Also there are waivers available for the national fee for Military parents.

Additional Expenses

After you register with Scouting America, your unit will be informed of a pending application or in some cases it is automatically accepted and the scout is added to the roster. There are typically some additional fees for scouting that I will now list for you to be aware of. This is not necessarily a comprehensive list but covers the basics.

  • Pack Dues (Annual): $80 for Pack 1110 but this is set by each pack and can fluctuate.
    • These dues help us pay for all of the pins, patches, belt loops and other awards for the kids as well as the supplies and materials to put on the meetings each month.

Fundraising

We just listed out a lot of expenses related to scouting, we at Pack 1110 want to make sure that scouting is accessible to everyone and one way that we do that is through fundraising. Cub Scout packs cannot accept direct donations but you can donate to our charter organizations and many of then will pass that through to the unit, for us, that is VFW Post 9182 in Katy, TX.

Our primary fundraiser though is the Trail’s End popcorn sales that run throughout the year. This fundraiser features a primary push starting in the summer and running through October or November each fall.

In our unit we choose to incentivize participation by passing a portion of our proceeds through to the scouts raising the funds. For more information on our fundraiser incentives and program, click here.

Have Fun!

That was a lot of information and it can feel like drinking from a firehose at first, but scouting is essentially a way to teach kids important life lessons through fun games and activities. We strive to keep the meetings fun and engaging while always having the kids walk away with something they learned.
